A LITTLE EVERY DAY – RELIEF – MAKE IT A HABIT!

ist1_5630066_yachtWe all have stress – there isn’t one person alive who doesn’t have something which stresses them.  Some have more stressors than others in their lives and life, being a cycle, at times, we have more stress than we want or need.  Nevertheless, we know we need to deal with it yet, we shy away from the very things which will help us – se tell ourselves we don’t have time!

Relief from stress saves you time – doesn’t seem like it because, de-stressors, too, take some of your time.  And that’s precisely why people won’t take the time to relieve themselves of stress through simple techniques – they don’t feel they have the time!

Yet, in the long run, the effects of stress will cost you – they’ll cost you in so many ways – time, health, family, work, etc. – and, at the extreme, burn out. 

What is the real reason people won’t take the time to de-stress? 

Because they don’t think they are worth it – everything else is more important – getting the job done, getting the report in, getting the kids to practice, over-extending themselves in their volunteer work – everything and everyone else is more important than caring for themselves.  That’s why people don’t take time for themselves every day to de-stress – even on days off from work.

Next time you feel the stress – you know the symptoms – do the very simplest thing of all – sit quietly on your own some place where you can be alone – the bathroom stall is always very private – take a few deep breaths, think of a beautiful place you like eg Hawaii, French Riviera, and think good thoughts too –  5 or 10 minutes – that’s all – anywhere, any time – this is possible – you’ll feel refreshed and ready to go again.  Your body and mind will thank you!  Make it a habit – every day!

COMPUTER – USE OUTLOOK TO KEEP YOU ON SCHEDULE

Many people overlook their computer as a good time management tool – it’s one of the best – and can save you countless hours especially if you couple it with a PDA. 

First, let’s say you have Outlook as your email tool.  In Outlook, there’s a calendar.  In this calendar, you can drag and drop emails into the calendar icon and immediately a window will open with the email inserted into the body of the form.  You set the date and time for the event, a name you want for the event, the amount of notice you need before the event – can be the day before – or 15 minutes – whatever you need.  Save and Close.  The computer will remind you of the appointment.  If you are not at your computer, make sure to have your PDA with you at all times and make sure you sync your PDA and computer every morning and every night.  You can have all your appointments in there.

How wonderful is that!  It’s absolutely terrific!  What a time saver.

Remember to add in recurring events too.  For instance, say you have a yoga class every Tuesday at 5 pm.  Set an appointment.  Click on Calendar icon.  New at the top left on your screen.  You’ll see “Recurrence” on the top toolbar.  You can set the day and time.  Finish identifying the event.  Save and close.  Until you stop it, the computer will remind you to go to your Yoga class every Tuesday at 5 pm.  Perfect!  The perfect nag!  No excuses for not going!

Peter Drucker, a genius on matters of management, said:  “Give your resources to your opportunities”.  If only people did this, can you imagine how much time and energy could be saved and put towards high productivity and self-advancement instead?

And, if bosses instead of criticizing would be looking for the best in you, wouldn’t life on the job be stimulating and motivating?

So why doesn’t it happen?

At an early age, we are told are the things we shouldn’t do and throughout life, others are quick to point out what’s wrong with us rather than what’s great about us!  Not true, you say.  Well, that’s not my experience – every time I compliment someone about something great they did (doesn’t have to be fireworks type of great) or on some positive personal trait, they are shocked – grateful – but almost suspicious of someone complimenting them.  They wait for me to ask them for something!

In the workplace, the “bosses” are taught they rule – others obey!  How positive is that?  With an attitude like that, the boss is immediately behind the eight ball.  Of course, the boss in this case will be looking for all that is wrong instead of all that is right.

Would it be a better strategy and save a lot of time if the boss instead was looking for each person’s most positive attributes and enhance the enterprise’s fortunes by maximizing the best talent?  Can you imagine how energizing it would be if you were allowed to show all of you that is extraordinary? 

“I’m the boss” is possibly the most toxic attitude in the workplace.  It’s foundation is at the root of all that is negativity about working at a job – it encourages politics, gossip, and everything else which the worst of the human condition.

Imagine a workplace where your boss sees only your best sides, talents and abilities!  Wouldn’t that be something!  And not only does the boss see it, the boss let’s you use them in the master plan!  How motivated would you be – would you be waking up, raring to go to work instead of experiencing the “Monday blues” 5 days a week!

You betcha!  And not only would you be benefitting, so would your workplace.  Can you imagine if everyone brought their best to work and the focus was on the positive instead of politics and criticism, how the entire atmostphere of the workplace would change?  From a place looking for “comformity” to a dynamic, exciting place where everyone is accepted and appreciated for all they are and do!

So why don’t we do it?  I think it’s because we are so “ingrained” – all of us –  in looking for the bad in ourselves and others.  It starts small – “no” when we’re little to “it’s not done that way” as we grow up.

We waste so much time on the negativity – looking for the bad.

How can you be different?  Adopt Peter Drucker’s philosophy – concentrate on using the best parts of you in your life and on enhancing those best parts!  Novel idea, huh?  Especially since we’re always trying to “fix ourselves”.

Stop fixing!  Start building!  Try it – you might like it!

YIPPEE! THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS HERE!

I love the holiday season – all of it!!!  The decorations, the spirit of it all, the parties, choosing gifts, and the sheer madness of it all!  I love it!

The big BUT here is that I learned a long time ago to pace myself during this time because I’m just like a little kid – I want to stay up late, see Santa and play!!!  Well, that’s good except that around this time of the year, you need to take care of yourself really, really well otherwise you’ll be pulled into so many directions, you’ll be “wasted” by the time Christmas day comes! 

Have a big calendar on your wall for November and December with big boxes and put in there all the events and things you need to do before Christmas day.  It’s the only way.  Why?  Because if you use your regular calendar only, you might just miss something and this is especially true if have a partner or spouse and/or children.  You all need to know what’s going on so you don’t double book yourself and you take the time to enjoy the great activities that come with the holidays – home decorating – baking cookies – inviting friends and family for get togethers – tobaganing – skiing – shopping – charitable events –

And at this time of the year especially, say no – you can’t do it all!  And you will need to say no to some of the things to do – if some of the things can be done after the Christmas day like seeing the lights of the town, then pencil those in for later. 

Most importantly – exercise, get your sleep, eat properly most of the time! and take care to monitor your stress levels – cut back when you find yourself rushing and out of breath!

Enjoy the holidays – love them – and be thankful for all that there is!

WHAT’S EASY TO ONE PERSON, IS NOT TO ANOTHER

How often to you feel this way when someone says to you, “but that’s so easy, I don’t understand why it’s hard for you!”

And then you feel like this little chicken!!!  Wild!!! 

When you know how, it all works – easily but when you’re learning, it’s a whole other ballgame! 

What someone can do in a few minutes, can take you hours – why?  Usually because the person who knows how to do it misses one small detail in passing on the knowledge so you struggle and struggle, ask questions but you don’t know what you are really suppose to ask, you get frustrated and the person showing you gets frustrated and  . . . . . it’s a disaster!

Take a break!  You’ll be wasting a lot of time trying to listen or trying to do something when you are frustrated!  Go for a walk – “refresh” the brain – and now, sanely, calmly, if the “teacher” is still around, go through the entire process, step by step, (yes painstakingly) – cover every single inch and write each step down.  You’ll see eventually the step you missed.  Then you’ll wonder why you found it so frustrating in the first place! 

It saves a lot of time not to get frustrated in the first place.  Use the technique of writing down the steps, in detail, the first time around.  Your nerves will thank you, your teacher will thank you and you’ll be able to better use that time somewhere else!
