The best way to increase productivity is play – there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever!

The definition of “professional” often is interpreted to mean – deadpan, serious, somber, lifeless, stoic, static, “dressed to the hilt” and should there be a show of emotion in any way, then wow, that’s a real “unprofessional” way to behave. If there is ever the mention of  words such as “fun”, “laughter”, “play” – oh, my – you’d think it was criminal to utter such words.  

Bunk!!! It’s all bunk! And it leads to a lack of productivity.  People become so concerned with being “professional”, they are always looking over their shoulder to gauge the reaction of those around them.

People are not robots, they are people – first and foremost – though you’d never know it in some cases by the way they are treated! All people in a job need to feel feelings other than numb and they need to be able to express those feelings without the fear of being sacked every time they say something “the boss doesn’t like”.

How this obssession with so-called “professional” comes about is through the insecurities of the leadership. These so-called leaders are so insecure in their leadership abilit,  they think they must “control” everything and everyone.   I’m not talking about their degrees here – MBA, PHD or whatever other letters they file behind their names

I’m talking about leadership. A person who is a leader knows full well that you cannot control anything or anyone but you can manage people and the work environment – big difference in attitude!

If a leader is secure in their leadership role, they create an atmosphere where people thrive.   In fact, a real leader encourages opposite points of view, expressions of emotion (with respect for all), opinions (constructive) and sharing.  Such a leader encourages laughter, fun, play, good solid debate, recognition of wonderful events in people’s lives such as their birthday, an anniversary, the birth of a baby. They also understand that humans do not have the same disposition every single day, day after day.  Things happen in people’s lives and sometimes there are outbursts or tears or sadness.  It’s a time for a leader to understand not reprimand.

Scrooge – remember Scrooge – well, he’s alive and well in many businesses nowadays – the worse side of Scroogethe one we see at the beginning of the movie.

Remember when the spirit takes Scrooge to see a former employer’s place of employment and the joy and happiness Scrooge felt reminiscing about his first job. The boss was always happy and encouraged happiness in the workplace. Was that “unprofessional”? And the critics would say, “Yes, but look what happened in the end”. What happened in the end was unscrupulous business practices by certain individuals – don’t mistake that with success in the workplace on a human level – the businessman was highly successful with lots of employees before being ravaged by the “vultures”.

Think about the end of Scrooge’s story and how happy we all feel with how he treats Bob Crachet with dignity and a smile (oh, yes, and the raise). Think how good that makes everyone feel! That’s why we watch that movie year after year and it remains a classic – Scrooge continued to be a successful businessman after his transformation and yet gained the most important thing of all – admiration and connection with humanity! A soul!

The definition of success in business should include both components – making profits and having a soul! The reduction in stress levels and waste of time would be enormous!

There is much to be learned from Scrooge.

I can tell you from experience, that increasing productivity in the workplace means to engage and engage means getting rid of words in the work environment such as “professional”, “unprofessional”, “insubordination”, “obey”, “do as I say”, “I’m the boss here and I give the orders”, “I’m the manager and I know everything there is to know about this place”, “Don’t raise your voice at me. I’m the boss”, “Who are you to give suggestions” and….. so on.

Instead, add in words such as:

  • “Thank you. That’s a great suggestion”. Let’s talk about it”
  • “We have a different point of view. Let’s debate the pros and cons of each one.”
  • “Thank you”
  •  “We each have a job to do and we’re all in it together – if we succeed working together, we get to keep our jobs.”
  • “It’s okay to get passionate about your point of view – I get it – I understand we raise our voices when we get excited; it’s okay”
  • “Let’s respect and honor each other as human beings first”
  •  “Let’s work together”,
  •  “Congratulations on your new baby – got you a little something and we’ll celebrate this afternoon”,
  • “Happy Birthday – some flowers for you, a card signed by everyone and we’ll have cake with coffee break”,
  • “I may be the boss but it’s only a job description just like yours. Let’s talk and solve these problems together”.

Wouldn’t the workplace be a different place and maybe the 80% of people who do not feel passionate about their jobs would gain pride and joy in their work and workplace. Imagine, spending 8 or more hours every day, 5 days a week, year after year after year – not being passionate about where you are and what you do!   Can you imagine if everyone would show up ready to play at making the business a success!  How would that change the way people see their role?  After all, that’s what business is – a game – try this strategy and that strategy and yet another – to win!

People are more productive when they feel appreciated, listened to, involved and they are afforded the dignity of their being.  And, as humans, productivity goes up when people are happy, when they know they are supported and they feel joy – when they can play!  Play in the workplace is multi-dimensional – as a leader, do you have enough savvy to pull it off?

How Do You Master Time Management?

How do you master time management?

Is it by using the lastest and greatest system?  Is it by having a very long to do list?  Is it by using the latest software?

Time Management – what is it really?  What exactly are you trying to accomplish by learning to manage your time?

Time Management is simple really – you have 24 hours every single day, 168 hours every single week, 8760 hours every single year – lots of time – so what’s the problem?  You make a decision about what to do with each one of those hours.  Why do so many people feel so much pressure and why do many people, because of the pressure, often make themselves very ill?

The answer is simple and straight forward:  self-mastery.  That’s it!  It’s not any more difficult than that.  It’s people who make time management difficult.  Why?  Because of fear.  People are afraidThey’re afraid of failure and afraid of successThey are afraid of making poor choices.  They are afraid of what might happen if . . . .

And so they hide – they hide behind time.  If they’re too busy, they have the perfect excuseThe perfect excuse – “I don’t have the time”.  But people have all the time in the world – no more and no less than those people who utilize good time management.

What’s the difference between someone who has adopted good time management and someone who is overwhelmed?  People with good time management practices put themselves first  AND those without good time management skills put others first. first.  Less effective time management is governed by such notions as: “trying to look good” or “managing what others think of them” or “following the rules” or fulfilling the notion of  “I’ve been brought up that way” – can you see the common thread here – it’s called people pleasingI can say one thing for sure:  you cannot please anyone but yourself.  That’s the only person you can please.  Others may be pleased with something you do but, in the end, the one and only person to please is yourself!

Shocking?  It is to most people.  As simple as this concept is, it is the most difficult one for most people to adopt. Why?  Because we’ve all been taught from a very early age that “people pleasing” is the name of the game – that means that other people are in charge of your time!

A guarantee:  if a person puts themselves first, time management issues will disappear. Why?  Because that person will do everything in their life that is good for themselves by fulfilling their dreams. And everything will fall into place.  Do you really know what you want?  That’s a whole other topic.

Are You Achieving your Goals? Why? Try This New Approach

Are you achieving your goals?  Why?  What do you think is stopping you from reaching them? 

Or do you just like the dreaming and that’s enough for you?  After all, you likely have most everything you want in any case – job, family, friends, money and free time to enjoy your hobbies.  And that’s okay – it’s okay to have fun dreaming of possibilities.

For those of you who do set goals or New Year’s Resolutions, are you struggling to turn your dreams into goals and goals into reality?

If so, why not try a new approach based on time management. 

Stats haven’t changed much in years – 3% of the population achieve their goals – that means a whopping 97% of people who set goals never realize them.  Isn’t that amazing? 

It’s not because there are no courses, books, systems or loads of information, because there are  – you just need to go on Amazon and search goals – you’ll be amazed how much there is available.

So I asked myself why?  Why don’t people achieve their goals?  Is it because they really don’t want them but it’s a fun exercise to dream?  Perhaps.  Is it because their lives change and what seemed important at one time, isn’t so any longer?  Perhaps.  Is it that they really don’t want to read a 300-page book on attaining goals and apply the principles?  Perhaps.  Is it because the course is fun to take but, like so many things, learn and forget?  Perhaps.

Or it could be something else.  I thought it might be something else.

So I’ve created a new system based on some old principles used in books and courses plus I’ve added a new twist to the process.  This new twist combines several principles into a step-by-step system that I believe will allow people to achieve their goals.  It certainly has helped me get and stay on track. 

Staying on track with goals is the most difficult part.  Just like so many things in life, there are obstacles and, if there is no immediate loss, then goals take a back seat to potential losses which are immediately apparent.

Are You Obssessed with Laying Blame? Why? Is it a Good Use of Your Time?

Are you obssessed with laying blame?  Why?  Is it a good use of your time?

Ask yourself what is the point of using all that time to find someone to blame.  What is your mindset when you operate that way?  What are you trying to accomplish?

Yesterday, I had  issues with an ISP provider. 

Two days before the help desk people had helped me with an issue but, in the process,  they made a mistake; it caused more problems.  Then they fixed the problem.  Well . . . actually they made it worse.  So I contacted the help desk again to resolve the worsening issue.

I was told I would have to send an email to another department.  Okay.  Did that only to find out it would take 48 hours to get a response!  You heard right – in this day and age of advanced computerization, 48 hours to fix a problem!  This ISP provider finds it perfectly acceptable to have their customers dead in the water for 48 hours!!! 

So I went back to the help desk. 

For 35 minutes, all this person wanted to do was find who was to blame35 minutes!!! Instead of helping me,  the customer, find a solution, all that person could think about was laying blame – he was obsessed!  He wanted dates, times, people’s names.  He asked me questions over and over which had already been answered.  He simply wasn’t “computing” the information I had provided (I’ve learned to ask short, precise questions with lots of detail when contacting help desks as well as copying and pasting an error messages I receive).  He wouldn’t transfer me to anyone else either.  His mind was totally focused on blame!

We meet so many people like these especially when we work in an office – these are people who are more focused on laying blame then finding a solution.  I suppose they feel if they can point the finger at someone, they’ve solved the problem.  They don’t seem to realize that a situation like this is not a murder investigation where laying blame is paramount!

I’m persistent – I’m reknown for my persistence – in this case, I had to get an answer.  So I kept at it and I could feel my blood boil but I kept reminding him that he was “customer service”, I was the “customer”, and I needed to be operational – now – not in 48 hours but now! 

Eventually, he came up with an option – 50 minutes into the “conversation”do you know how long the best solution possible   took? less than 6 minutes!!!  That’s right – less than 6 minutes!  Not only that, it’s a service they offer for free!

If companies are looking for efficiencies, then look at how long it takes their people to complete tasks.  If I was the supervisor of live chat for any company, I would immediately look at the logs first day of the week for my shift.  Any live chat that took longer than 30 minutes, I would a serious look at the conversations which occurred during that time.  If I would have found a live chat record which read like this one, I would definitely have found some serious customer service and computer training for this help desk person.  The help desk job is not easy sometimes but this approach only makes it far more difficult.

If you are obssessed about laying blame every single time a problem occurs, ask yourself why.  What are you trying to accomplish by laying blame?  Are you just wasting time and spinning your wheels?  Why are you focused more on laying blame rather than you are on solving the problem?  Why do you believe that using your time this way is warranted?  And, if it is the customer you are trying to blame, then why is that a good  approach?  Isn’t it better to be in a solution mindset rather than a blame mindset?

It’s All About Creating Belief

It’s All About Creating Belief – in your head! or . . . someone else’s!

I’ve been surfing the net now for a long time and have come across all manner of “sales” pages, sites, reviews, etc. 

These sales pages are developed to “make us believe” that what they have is what we want –  even if we never intended to buy!  Lead us “down the garden path” so to speak.

It’s amazing the range of topics – pills, services, software, religion, anti-something or other, physical products, courses, programs, equipment, etc.

There’s a psychology to it all – did you ever notice how powerful the statements are in some cases – even if you were only mildly interested in something, all of a sudden, you find yourself reading the entire multiple-page copy!  And . . . then . . . you’re in the shopping cart!!!

And it is all psychology!  A real live example of this “methodology of psychological selling” is a person I know about who sells incredibly expensive packages of “learning” from the stage and he’s done it for years.  Newspaper columnists have “warned” the population about this guy’s approach and tell people over and over and over again not to buy.  But, year after year after year, he rakes in millions of dollars selling incredibly expensive products that produce little to no results but people keep buying – he keeps the dream alive!  The psychology is brilliant – – he has people literally running to buy his programs – even to the point of mortgaging their homes!  I’m not kidding!  It’s incredible to see! 

Why do I know it’s all about psychology?  Because he taught his presentation to others with different personalities and they too have success getting people to run like mad to buy tapes, courses, books, T-shirts, etc. – they may not be as successful as he is but they sell nonethless.  Therefore, it’s not his charisma alone but a “system” – psychological methodologies.

So it is anywhere – where there is something to sell – there is psychology – but those who play the game the best, make the most money. 

So why is this important for you to know?  After all, you’re likely saying to yourself, “There nothing new here.  I know this.  Everyone knows it.  So what?  Besides I’m not in sales.”

The “so what”, I think, is that learning from these people who best use psychology, can actually enhance our daily lives –  getting what we want! 

Every single day in everything we do – – – if we become very skilled at applying psychology in every situation we ever find ourselves, we’ll likely get more of what we want without aggression, bullying,  lying, yelling, crying,  inventing stories, being phoney or other negative means – we’ll be happy getting what we want and others will be happy giving it to us!  Isn’t that much better! 

If you want to see what I mean, research products or services on the net and read sales copy.  Read the copy very carefully and notice what happens to your emotions as you read.  You’ll experience varying levels of emotions reading copy created by very good copywriters on marketers’ sites.  And, when you find one that, after reading the copy, you want to buy the product or service, read the copy again very carefully and notice the words and phrases they use to get you to the “buy button —the psychological buy buttons!  Yet, they have not used negative means to get you there.

It’s very, very interesting – and you can see how this can be applied to every day life — in interviews, when you’re asking for something from someone, disciplining a child and a host of other situations we encounter every single day.  Is it manipulating?  Yes.  We manipulate anyway — all of us every day (mostly through other -means – what do you think smiling is all about?) so isn’t it worth learning to do it better in a way which leads to better results without all the stress and strain?  All it takes is:   just a little understanding of the other person’s needs By addressing those needs, we can create a belief in someone else’s head that it’s a good idea to give us what we want!  And, yes, it does take practice.  Why?   Because it’s difficult to focus on someone else’s needs when we’re trying to satisfy our own.
