Sometimes we get into our own heads so much we begin to believe we really don’t have the time to do what we want to do.  Stop.  Help somebody else.

Once you are able to concentrate on helping someone else outside your families and friends, you’ll find, all of a sudden, that, indeed, you did have the time. 

Time can be an illusion – we begin to use it as an excuse for what we are not doing – “I don’t have the time” – is a common theme.  Yet, isn’t it funny that when something happens to stop the “routine”, there seems to be time, it slows down and we can breathe. 

Next time you find yourself “going crazy”, stop, help some stranger do something – cross the street, get through a door, pick up something they dropped, give up your seat on the bus, or work for Habitat, you’ll see you have all the time you need and want – you just have to learn to use it as you want to use it.

How long does it really take to start a new business?  Depends.

If you are bound and determined that you are going to start a “perfect” new business, then the answer is never.  If you want to just get going developing  an idea that has “haunted” you for quite a while, then the answer is today.  Then there are the variations in between both of these based on people’s different personalities and how big of a business you want to build.  Start very, very small – the bare minimum – try it on for size first.

Small business is easy and it’s difficult.  Why?  Because of the enormity of information, the lack of really good training for small business hopefuls and the confusion of how, what, where, when, who, why and even the what.  What is a person to do?

Start.  What do I mean by that?  Just begin.  Don’t think business plan just yet – just get a business going.  But you don’t know what you’ll need – here is a starter list for small business hopeful:

  • business name – start with your own – you can change the name later eg if your name is Jane Dexter and you want to start a cleaning business, call it Jane Dexter Home Cleaning Services – simple.  You don’t even have to register your company at this point – just begin.  You don’t have to charge GST until you reach $30,000 per year.
  • get yourself a domain name and create a free website on Google and the many other free website providers or inexpensive web hosts such as hostmonster, bluehost, etc.  Create a couple of pages such as your Home Page, About Page, and maybe a couple of pages on organizing or cleaning or whatever.
  • decide on what you’ll charge after some preliminary research on the web
  • decide what kind of client you want
  • go to a local small printer, (a small business too) show them your website and ask them to produce a postcard for distribution as well as a standard business card which will match your website – make it really, really simple – business name, phone number, tag line (short 5 or 6 word expression of what you do under your business name), your name, and a list of services on the back of both your business card and your postcard – should cost around $50 for 200 postcards and $25 or $50 for a decent business card – don’t go crazy spending a lot of money on printing – you’re not ready for that yet – just get something done that is presentable.
  • decide where you’ll advertise and promote
  •  start 

Will this be a successful business?  Maybe.  The truth is that you’ll find out whether you really want to do this or not, you can do it while you still have a job, and it won’t cost you a lot of time, energy and money to give it a try.  Then you’ll know for sure if it is truly what you want to do.

Yes, there are a ton of other things you could do – but, let’s face it – you are neither creating something that hasn’t existed before in the world – the only newness about it is your entry into owning your own small business. 

Let’s say you love being in your own business and your business takes off.  What then?  I’ll talk about that in other segments.

MULTI-TASKING – IT'S A MYTH! Job seekers – is it an opportunity or a nightmare waiting to happen?

Anyone who believes they are a great multi-tasker is living in la-la land.  There is no such thing?  Why?  Because of the way people are built.  No human can think two thoughts at once nor can they do two things at once.

Prove it, you say, because you are likely going to say, “I do it all the time.  I’m great at it and people have said so.” 

What does multi-tasking mean, exactly?  To most people, it means the ability to do several things at one time.  You simply cannot.  You may be going at the speed of light doing one thing after another in a very short period of time, but no matter how fast you are doing things, you are still only doing one thing at a time.  

You don’t believe me – you say you can.  Prove it to yourself.

Try this – put three balls in your hands  Throw one ball up and try to catch it.  Likely, that’s easy.  Now, throw two balls up at once and try to catch both balls at once – can you do it?  Not unless they land in your hand both at the same time in the such a way that you can grip both of them at once Yes, you can catch both in one hand, however, one will be caught or moved to the lower part of your palm and the next week shortly after with your fingers – still, you’re catching one ball at one time – not two.  Or you’ll drop the one you caught while catching the other.  Now throw all three balls up in the air and try catching all three at once – at least one of the those balls will land on the floor while your mind concentrates on catching one ball at a time.

Look at jugglers – are they catching their balls or pins all together?  No – it’s one at a time and because they are skilled, can likely hold two, three, four or more balls or pins in each hand.  While they are juggling, it’s one at a time from hand to air.

Employers who include multi-tasking in their job descriptions are telling me they want people to do a lot of work in a very short period of time and at the time of posting the job, they don’t really understand what they want that person to accomplish during the hours they are contracting that person’s time.  

If you are looking at this kind of ad, then you can think of it in several ways:

–  the employer doesn’t really know what they want the new person to do

–  the employer means something else entirely – maybe they mean someone who works fast or thinks fast or is able to organize themselves efficiently

–   it’s a workplace in chaos or it is chaotic in which case ask yourself if that is the type of environment in which you want to work

–  it’s  an opportunity, if you are an organizer,  to help this employer organize better. 

–  there is an opportunity to design your own job because it’s clear the employer is unclear about their needs – but do you really want to take that on?

If you are still interested, then try to get an interview – and find out, through your questions, what is going on in that business.  Is it something you can deal with effectively?  Are they the type of people you can work with?  Are they looking for an employee or a slave?  Do they expect from this person what they themselves can’t do or deliver? 

Either it’s an opportunity or a nightmare waiting to happen – only you can make that choice.  You need to know there is a choice and the question is can you work with it or will it work against you?


Save your time and your energy – be who are – it’s the most important thing you have to do in your life for greater happiness and joy every day.

On Oprah one day, she said that there is a place for everyone – a place where they can be themselves and belong – quite an approach because we’ve always been told we have to be what “they” want us to be whether it be the teachers in school, the profs at university, or the boss at work.  And we have been repeatedly told to put up and shut up – do your work and go home to be who you are. 

So for 8 or more hours per day you have to be someone else in order to make a living – does that make sense?  When it’s put like that, of course, it doesn’t.  However, people need food, shelter and clothing – they must earn money and they must keep that money coming in especially when they have family members who are dependent on that income as well.

It’s not easy either to research the “culture” of other businesses and organizations.  So we find a job.  Then we learn about pensions and find a job with a pension.  Then, we show up for work every day, take our vacations and be who we are at home until we retire.  So will you be able to be yourself then?

Wouldn’t it be best to love and accept who you are, change jobs until you find an environment which empowers and allows your very best to shine?  And if you can’t find such a job, how about developing your own small business?  Could it be possible that a small business could give you the same security but in a much healthier way?

Think about it – be who are – honor your specialness – love your uniqueness – be happy, generally – what a concept!


Here are 5 tips to save the earth and by saving the earth, you are saving time.  How? 

Do you remember a time when you were relaxed and you got a lot done in a day without getting frazzled?  Now think of a time when you were hyper, almost panting every minute, and you looked back only to see you had not done as much as you would have liked and you were frantic?

If you consciously connect with your space, you help yourself get grounded.  Thinking about how to make things better rather than doing, having and being more has its own special wisdom which you will feel when you do something like this:

Smart planting – choose pest-resistant varieties of plants and use the right soil, put them in the right environment of sun and moisture so the plants are strong.   You’ll have a great harvest and save time and expense of pesticides not to mention a healthier environment for you!

Turn off your computer monitors when you know you won’t be at your desk or using the computer for a while such as during a lunch break.  Screen saver mode uses almost as much energy as if the monitor was on.

Clean your kettle – you’ll not only have better tasting tea and coffee, but you’ll boil water faster.  Just boil 2 cups of distilled white vinegar in your kettle to dislodge build up.  Remember to rinse your kettle afterwards.

Turn the heat down – when you are entertaining, take into account the heat radiated by your guests.  They’ll be more comfortable because it’s not so hot and you’ll save on heating costs!  Costs = time!

Have your children’s birthday party in the woods or a park – they’ll get fresh air, discover new things and you’ll have fun too!  No house to clean afterwards and, because you’re in the woods, you’ll likely cook those hot dogs on wood or coals.
