Does Mortality Factor into Time Management?

Does Mortality Factor into Time Management?Does mortality factor into time management?  It should.  Why?

Because when people are faced the finite reality of their time on earth, it is amazing how attitudes change about how they are spending their time on earth.  It is amazing how flowers, trees and things and people  they really love really come into focus – they don’t want to spend their time any longer experiencing the parts of life which they don’t enjoy.

It is a reality of the human condition – we are all going to die – when?  Nobody knows – it could be today, tomorrow or 50 years from now -

If you knew you were going to die 3 years from now, would you be spending your time the way you are now? If not, what would you change?  What’s preventing you from changing now?

If you are spending your time doing what you want to do, then you are one of the few lucky people on earth.  Most people stay with what they’ve got no matter how much they dislike it – the job provides the security they seek, the spouse provides the stability, the family members are tolerated just in case they’re needed somewhere along the line, colleagues are entertained when these same people would never be friends and a host of other activities are encompassed within the boundaries of time – just in case there might be a benefit at some future date.

Why?  The life they want is not something they have – better to keep what you have then risk the unknown. Yet . . . . there is always a longing . . . . and there is always “I must, I must, I must” – it keeps people in a frenzy of activity – spending time with people they don’t particularly like, doing things for others they don’t want to do and being places where they don’t want to be.

If a people keep fighting against themselves, then there is a constant trying to “catch up” to themselves. They think if they fill their nights and days with enough activity, they won’t notice all the things they are doing they don’t really want to do!

How do you think that is different from someone whose main objective is to do all they enjoy, be with the people they really like and go places where they really want to be?  Can you feel the calmness in that approach . . . . we all can but more often than not we do the opposite.

If you did factor in your mortality, what would you be doing? Would you be spending your time living the life you want or living the life you think will deliver what you only imagine?  How disappointed will you be if people don’t deliver?  What if you’re fired – what if your spouse leaves you – what if your family won’t support you when you need it – what if your colleagues stab you in the back?  What will you have left?

How would you be spending your time today if you factored in your own mortality?

Texting – A New Addiction! Has it taken over your life?

Texting A New Addiction! Has it taken over your life?Texting – the new addiction!  Has it taken over your life?

People keep talking about how little time they have and how they can’t live without their cell phone.  But, if you simply watch people on the street, you’ll see that cell phone calling and texting has become an addiction.  How can you tell?

It’s that constant chatter – one call after another or the constant texting – an hour bus ride is completely consumed by texting!  It’s not just one person on the bus either and it’s not only a certain age group – it’s amazing how one gadget which was suppose to save time is actually eating up people’s time at an incredible rate!

Is it connecting?  Perhaps.  At some level, it’s connecting; at another level it’s just another way to shut out the world.  Gauge the reactions – if the cell phone dies, there are two reactions

  1. “I’m lost” look – what am I going to do with myself now?
  2. Anger – a raging look appears on their faces and they become very agitated

It doesn’t take a psychiatrist or psychologist to understand the reaction.

Oprah has asked people to sign a pledge not to text while driving!  Imagine, Oprah asking people to sign a pledge not to do something frighteningly dangerous!

Driving today – you need to watch for bicycles, rollerbladers, pedestrians, children, animals, crazy drivers, skateboarders, motorcyclists and everyone else on the road – how can anyone in their right mind ever think that texting is a safe thing to do while driving?  That’s how pervasive texting has become – people texting while driving!  Is that reasonable?  Of course, not because they may kill themselves or someone else or both in the process.  Imagine texting even though it may cost you your life!

Next time you pick up your cell phone to call or text, ask yourself:  “Is it really necessary that I make this call or send this text?”  Not only are you using up your time but you’re using up someone else’s time too.

Reality check:  Has texting taken over my life?

The Immortality of Humans

The Immortality of HumansA friend died this week.  A wonderful human being in my books.  The sadness has stayed with me all week.  Her funeral is tomorrow.

Though she died on Tuesday, she is still very much alive in my mind.  The energy of her life remains on earth.  Her emails to me are still on my computer and I still think she’s there though I know better.

A geology professor of mine who was in his seventies at the time made a remarkable opening statement to our class.  He said he was not afraid of dying because he knew he would would live forever.  We were stunned by his remark – we didn’t understand at all what he meant.  He went on to tell us that no one ever really dies.  All matter is energy, atoms in a particular form.  He had us looking around at the room and explained that everything we saw and touched all came from the raw materials on our earth even if we didn’t connect with it that way at the moment.  He pointed to the materials in the ceiling, floors, desks, plants, shoes, clothes, etc.  Everything in our surroundings came from some other form – ore, petroleum, soil (plant fibers), water, wood from trees and so on.  Our energy continues at infinitum in the world.   He pointed to the formation of fossils from living creatures, the ash of burning materials returning to the earth from where they came  and the materials from our earth which was once a liquid in the center of our earth.  We are all just energy – molecules shaped in a particular form which will continue to change as our body deterioriates and people’s memories fade once we die.  But in one form or another we will always be here – we will never truly die.

Our memories, a form of energy,  fade but we still remember, don’t we?  Every once in a while I remember people who were part of my life in one way or another and died a long time ago and yet I give them energy by remembering theirs.

The reality is she and I will never again sit together with a glass of wine in our hands, laughing, talking, dancing, being silly and connecting over the little dramas of our lives.

I’m glad to have known her on the physical level of our existence on earth.  Our relationship has changed.  Her spirit, her energy on all levels and her being as I knew them are now gone.  I will always cherish the little time we shared and certainly as long as I live I will remember her – she will never be gone without a trace.
