Wow, what a powerful article. I wanna answer these questions right now as I’m procrastinating on something and wanna get over it.
What’s the payoff to procrastinating on this?
I let myself off the hook by not having to deal with the fact that I may miss something or make a mistake while proofreading a project. I don’t have to deal with the fact that “to err is human” and I could make a mistake. I get to keep my perfectionism intact because by not looking at it – I get to pretend it’s right when I know otherwise.
Are you still interested in the reward or payoff?
Honestly, I am still interested in the reward AND I know that it’s unrealistic to think that the project will get done unless I’m willing to come face to face with the fact that I may miss something even though I do my best to proofread it carefully. I can double and triple check my work and still miss something.
On the “glass half full side though”, I am just as likely to catch mistakes as make them and that’s what moves the project forward in the long run. So, now I’m interested in looking at the project again.
What payoff are you interested in now?
I’m interested in looking at the project.timing myself for an hour and seeing what I can accomplish. I’ll put some relaxing music on and have something to drink while I do it to “ease the pain” of proofreading.
Thanks for this Lorraine. You helped me work through it.
It’s a great process you went through – asking these questions – I’m glad it worked for you by understanding the payoff and reassessing how you use your time to finish your project.
